"To me, memes embody culture. Memes are fossils of the zeitgeist. They are nuanced, visual, data-rich artifacts revealing social sentiment." Besides partering with the Institute, Matt Klein is a cultural theorist, strategist, and writer. As Head of Foresight at Reddit, Inc., one of the internet’s busiest websites and largest hubs for internet culture, he deciphers memes, micro-communities, and digital trends to make sense of social shifts. He’s also the writer of the publication ZINE, which studies overlooked social shifts. We spoke to Klein about what foresight can learn from cultural research, why trend reports may not all be entirely BS, and why memes should be taken seriously as both products and engines of culture. Matt Klein spoke to Casper Skovgaard Petersen and August Leo Liljenberg. The interview was first published in FARSIGHT - our quarterly publication. Read the full interview below, and reach out to Matt Klein and Lasse Jonasson if you want to be on the forefront of cultural shifts and to leverage foresight and futures thinking in your organisation #foresight #futuresthinking Lasse Jonasson - Nabil Ali Jaloud - Toke Hanghøj

An independent, non-profit futures think tank — founded in 1969. We equip you to act on the future, today.
About us
The Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies (Instituttet for Fremtidsforskning) is an independent, non-profit futures think tank – founded in 1969. We help people and organisations imagine, work with, and shape their future. The Institute was founded in 1969 by former Danish Finance Minister and OECD-Secretary General, Professor Thorkil Kristensen, with the support of visionary public and private organisations, to better qualify decision-making through futures studies and to contribute to the betterment of our society. That is our purpose. The Institute is today a truly global entity working with public, private, philanthropic, and academic organisations around the world. We act as an advisory, a publisher, an event organiser, and as an initiator of various future orientated joint-venture initiatives. The Institute is also configured as a community of sorts, offering memberships for organisations and individuals. We believe that, as the Institute itself, the future belongs to no-one and yet to everyone. We are by decree here to contribute to the betterment of our society, meaning better for the largest possible number of stakeholders. Our own definition of better is based on our perception of our Nordic values firmly rooted in trust, equality, openness, integrity, and inclusiveness, and a society where critical decisions about the future are based on insights, not intuition. Our research within futures studies is essentially about spotting initial signals, identifying patterns, and convert analysis into insights about potential futures. The Institute does not predict the future, this is of course impossible, but instead we generate the best possibly qualified assumptions for potential futures. All of the Institute’s profits are allocated to further futures studies and to realising our purpose.

Lyt her: https://lnkd.in/dzKESRKF

What are planetary problems? And how are they different from global ones? 🌍 In the new episode of the FARSIGHT podcast, hosts Casper Skovgaard Petersen and August Leo Liljenberg speak to Nils Gilman about his vision for the future of governance as it's laid out in the book Children of a Modest Star ("crucial reading" according to Kim Stanley Robinson). Gilman’s proposal is bold and unique for a historian, and even for a futurist (he is both). He’s not content with merely offering a diagnosis of why current systems of governance can’t address planetary problems like climate change, pandemics, or mass extinction, but provides answers to the inevitable question, "so, what do we do about it?" The response, to Gilman, is planetary institutions operating on multiple scales – from the hyperlocal to the Earth-encompassing. Nils Gilman is Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President at the Berggruen Institute and Deputy Editor of Noema Magazine.

Quantum Storm 🌊 If you have ever logged in with a password, made an online payment, or updated your operating system, you have used cryptography. For centuries, humans have relied on different practices at the intersection of art and science to obscure and conceal language – to keep secrets secret. The digitalisation of payment systems and identity verification services have made encryption ubiquitous – especially within the financial world where money has transformed into data. However, the seamlessness and democratisation of cryptography introduces an inherent challenge: any vulnerability in these widely adopted systems could have far-reaching consequences. As cryptography plays a central role in both finance and cybersecurity, assessing its resilience has become increasingly important. There is one cryptographic development that looms especially large for financial risk-analysts, however: the emergence of quantum computing. Read the full article here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dy5Aedfw The article is written by Luca Barbieri and was first published in FARSIGHT, our quarterly publication on all things "future".

#futuregenerations #foresight #futuresthinking Thor Svanholm Gustavfson - Daria (Dasha) Krivonos - Toke Hanghøj

As a proud member of the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies' foresight network, I’m lucky to be part of a sharp, international community where we exchange experiences, tools, and inspiration to future-proof our organizations – with excellent input from CIFS 🚀 Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting how we work with foresight at DBI The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology 🔥I shared our journey of analyzing megatrends and developing future scenarios to guide the creation of our current strategy. (We also involved external stakeholders in imagining the future with us – but I had to keep it short 😅) How we analysed megatrends 🕵️♂️ - Scanned 15 megatrend reports - Broke them down into sub-trends - Rebuilt 8 megatrends filtered through our sphere of influence - Assessed their impact (quantitative + qualitative) on our business - Identified strategic responses – input to our strategy How we designed scenarios 🧭 - Selected the most impactful megatrends - Mapped sub-trends by impact/uncertainty to find critical uncertainties - Created axes from these uncertainties, the poles representing extreme opposite outcomes - Combined axes to create a 2x2 matrix, spanning 4 future directions - Populated scenarios with STEEPLE factors + narratives and visuals - Developed strategies using SWOT-TOWS - Tested strategy resilience via wind-tunneling Learnings & reflections 🧠 - The megatrend analysis effort is valuable but time-consuming. How can we scan smarter, continuously? - The process of designing scenarios matters: it creates engagement, challenges assumptions, expands thinking - Resilience is just one way to evaluate strategy. But what matters most for your company – resilience, first-mover advantage, ethical leadership, or a mix? 👉 I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences 🙏 #dbi
